Wood Leopard Moth

Description: Zeuzera pyrina, the Wood Leopard Moth, is a member of the family Cossidae. Prior to my sighting of this moth, I had never seen a moth in the family. This moth was introduced in the 1800 s and was first reported in North America at Hoboken, New Jersey in 1882. It takes 2-3 years for the whole life cycle to complete itself, so this moth is likely 2-3 years old. The first two photos are of the moth as it was warming itself up to fly away. This moth was most likely one of the favorites for the kids at the East Brunswick Butterfly Park Moth Night. They loved putting their fingers gently on the wings as they were beating. It was an amazing experience to see the kids say Wow!! They were enthralled as it crawled along their arms and hands.

Syrphus Mosca cernidora

Description: Its wasp-like appearance, the kind that sting, keeps potential predators at bay, however, it is Syrphus ribesii, a hoverfly, that is, it is nothing more than a fly disguised as danger. It has no stinger, nor does it bite. Well, actually, in its larval stage, it devours harmful aphids, and is therefore used in biological pest control. As an adult, it is a tireless visitor to flowers, an effective pollinator. Its flight capacity allows it to hover in the air, like a kestrel or a helicopter does. For this reason it is also known as a sifting fly. To distinguish it from the real wasps, one can look at those big eyes, which say I am a fly, calm down. Or you can also notice that it does not have a “wasp waist”.

A number of people in Killeen and Harker Heights think the Welcome to Killeen sign along IH-14 has become just that. Now, a community is searching for answers to a problem that recently turned deadly. The interstate sign welcoming people to Killeen looks anything but after a deadly crash that ended the life of Julianna Allen.
